Virtual Tour of the Castle of Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara Castle is not only Alicante’s most notable monument, it also provides many outdoor and indoor film locations. The fortress was originally Arab and it served as a prison during the Spanish Civil War. It provides a fantastic setting to shoot historical or war scenes, for example. It also has spectacular panoramic views, due to its height and proximity to the sea.

SANTA BARBARA CASTLE INTERIOR

The castle’s interior is divided into three clearly distinct ramparts.
The first rampart is the tallest and corresponds to the former Keep, one of the oldest remnants of the entire fortress, with foundations from the eleventh to thirteenth centuries. This compound is formed by the Stronghold of the Englishmen, as well as other dependencies: The Military Engineers’ Barracks, the Hall of Nobles, formerly used as a hospital, the Governor’s House, the Cisterns and the recently restored dungeons.

The intermediate rampart constitutes the biggest set of dependencies completed in 1580: Room of Phillip II, the former Troop Corps.

The lower rampart includes the Revellín del Bon Repós and dates back to the eighteenth century. Today it is used as a car park. A monument to a celebrated soldier from Alicante, Félix Berenguer de Marquina, is located here. He was governor general of the Philippines and viceroy of New Mexico. The large white marble coat of arms (eighteenth century) above the door leading to the second rampart was in the Royal Consulate of the Sea, a building that was destroyed by an explosion.

The Castle’s tunnel and lifts: it is possible to access the Castle’s lifts through a tunnel dug in the rock, located in Avenida Juan Bautista Lafora. This engineering feat includes steel side panels and LED lighting with avant-garde aesthetics.

SANTA BARBARA CASTLE EXTERIOR

The intermediate rampart houses the broad Garrison Courtyard and the ruins of the hermitage of Santa Barbara, the Guard Corps and the Queen’s Rampart lie behind it.

In addition to the rampart’s breathtaking panoramic views, spectacular shots can be taken from the terrace of the cafeteria-restaurant with the sea and the Castle courtyard in the background. In addition, the exterior of the Castle offers one of the city’s most distinctive features, the Moor’s Face (La Cara del Moro), corresponding to a rocky profile in the mountainside, visible from Postiguet Beach.

Alicante’s Marina offers different types of filming locations.
For example, El Paseo Volado is a raised walkway with a concrete and wooden floor, as well as awnings inspired by albatross wings. The footbridge offers views of Alicante’s entire sea front, the Sports Marina, Santa Barbara Castle, Postiguet Beach, Serra Grossa and Cabo de las Huertas.

The Sports Marina is on the same site: spectacular yachts and piers, as well as entertainment and restaurant venues provide a perfect setting for all kinds of scenes related to sailing or leisure.

The Town Hall is an eighteenth century baroque civil architectural work built by the architect Lorenzo Chápuli on the site of the former City Hall. The main facade presents decorative features such as the Solomonic columns and two towers.

Elegant, red marble stairs lead to the Isabelline style Blue Room on the top floor, the Plenary Room and a chapel where masses can be celebrated.

The Town Hall has a minimalist-looking annex building, which houses the archaeological remains of the medieval city of Alicante on the ground floor. The structure of the building is made of cement and iron and can be viewed both from the inside and outside. The top floor of the annex building also includes a grand, avant-garde looking glazed terrace with views of Santa Barbara Castle.

Please do not hesitate to contact us for any further details on this building.

Tabarca island is the only inhabited island in the Valencian region. This small archipelago has an urban nucleus surrounded by thick walls and is listed as a Historic-Artistic site (Conjunto Histórico-Artístico) and as Heritage of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural). It is 1800m long and up to 400m wide.

The island has several creeks of easy access, accommodation, restaurants, a recently restored small church as well as a square-shaped lighthouse. Tabarca constitutes a unique and singular location for outdoor shoots thanks to scarce rainfall and a warm climate throughout the year.

Undoubtedly, the Creeks of Cabo de Las Huertas constitute one of Alicante’s most valuable natural resources, together with Tabarca Island. This cliffy area and its crystal waters contain archaeological remains of Iberian-Roman fish driers. They are visible in general shots. Scenes can take place in most of its creeks since they are easily accessible.

A big advantage of this outdoor location is that many spots convey a feeling of open nature and are adapted to scenes requiring the presence of the sea and nature.
